It is often difficult to separate the influence of nature from the influence of nurture to answer these kinds of questions about what causes such-and-such behavior.

For instance, in our own cases, there probably was some inherent personality trait that pushed us in the direction of swinging. In each of our cases, though, this trait probably wasn't the trait of being risk-takers (as neither one of us is really a "jump out of a plane" type), but the trait of being rebellious. But what complicates the story is that, for each of us, these traits led us into cultures that further pushed us in the direction of doing something like swinging.

In Her case, being rebellious led her into a subculture ("goth" subculture, obviously...check our profile name) where marching to the beat of a different drummer was encouraged and cultivated and where people, despite disregarding the way that mainstream culture wanted them to act, got along just fine, thank you very much.

In His case, being rebellious led him into the company of progressive-minded intellectuals who rewarded independent thinking, taught him that just because something's traditional doesn't make it right and made him realize that society often shoots itself in the foot with its own stupid rules.

So both of us probably ended up embracing swinging partially because of our initial disposition to be rebellious, but also partially because of the cultural contexts that each of us were drawn to because of that rebelliousness, each of which made us more amenable to doing something really different that there seemed to be no reason not to do -- swinging.
