Great write up and most of your comments and ideas are right on the money. We at Tempting Images have shot everything from celebs and politicians to the bride-to-be house and wife who wants sexy photos for their man. For the amatuer model we like to send them this list of helpful hints...
Tips for your photo shoot
1) Bold colors work, royal blues, strong reds along with whites and blacks look the best. Avoid light Yellows and Greens.
2) High heels make legs look longer and thinner. Also nude panty hose give you slim and curvy legs.
3) Before your shoot, wear loose clothes and no undergarments, this will help avoid panty lines and strap marks If you have strap marks (about 15 minutes and the lines will disappear)
4) Round or V-necked shirts or dresses are good, avoid straight-necked clothes as they are static and dull.
5) Over dressing or under dressing for a location shoot adds glamour.
6) A simple over sized shirt or a vest is a great prop.
7) Always wear undergarments that match each other and the outer garments if possible when you are shooting.
8) Always wash, shave and/or trim all the areas that might be photographed.
9) Never eat right before a photo shoot, as it will give you a noticeable tummy.
10) Photography make-up is heavier than normal make-up, don’t be afraid to dab on a lil extra. Consider body make-up for any marks that you don’t want seen. (Spend $40 or $50 and hire a MUA - it will make a huge difference)
11) Always take a bottle of water and a small face towel, the lights get hot.
12) Washing your hair in beer, mayo, or even egg will give it some extra shine.
13) Pointed toes makes legs look longer
14) Reclining positions and arch backs make a flat tummy
15) Every joint should be broken, just a slight bend (Neck, elbows, wrist, waist, etc.)
A couple things I can tell you as well, if you are flat out underweight - do not pull in your stomach, ribs are not pretty... Otherwise, yes, stick out your chest and pull your stomach. This goes for guys too...
Remember, whatever is closest to the camera will appear bigger! Use shadows to hide heavier body parts...
As for lighting, the best light is sunlight, either through a window or outside. The hour before sunset and the hour after sunrise are called the magic hour. (The sun is at it's steepest angle and casting longer rays of light - Reds and oranges). This is the BEST time to shoot. Avoid direct sunlight at noon, use a shaded area - this will prevent squinty eyes and harsh shadows in the eye sockets.
We have actually been hired to shoot at some parties like Nibbler is talking about and they are always a huge success. Lots of fun, great chance to meet people, and lots of wonderful pictures to remember it by...
