Ray was born and raised in Houston by his Mexican father and New Jersey mother. Amanda grew up as a military brat and moved all over, including Arkansas, New Mexico, Georgia, Japan, Oklahoma, and finally Texas, where her parents had met as high school sweethearts. After high school, Ray worked his way up through the ranks at Compaq and then Hewlett Packard. Amanda finished her Masters in accounting at Stephen F. Austin State University and became a Senior Financial Accountant.

The two met at a lifestyle meet-and-greet at Tony's Tavern in Houston. They were both swingle at the time and had come with different parties. The two had immediate chemistry, and conversed about their experiences as singles in the lifestyle. As the conversation went on, their flirting increased with constant touching, laughing, smiles and light kissing. They were surprised to learn that they had lived and worked really close by one another for the past three years, yet this was the first time they'd ever met. The attraction between them was undeniable. Amanda liked Ray a lot... too much, she felt. She had just recently gotten out of a bad relationship and was trying to stay single for a while and didn't want to get wrapped up with someone else. She tried to stay away from Ray... but the universe apparently had other plans.

The two ended up running into each other at a party in New Orleans. Amanda had come with a couple, and Ray with some coworkers. Amanda gave in to fate, and they started dating. They went at each other cannonball style as neither one of them knows how to do anything slow. One night, at the karaoke show where Ray worked on the side as a DJ, he sung the song "Amazed" by Lonestar while inserting Amanda's name into the lyrics. It was then that Ray said "I love you." Amanda couldn't stop herself, and said "Yes, I love you too..." It took them just a few months to know just how deep it went.
